Alec Baldwin sues Ukrainian parents for neglect, sister of slain ‘Rust’ cinematographer Halina Hutchins

Alec Baldwin already faces five years in prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter charges and the 2021 fatal shooting of Halina Hutchins, and now the victim’s parents and sister the rust The cinematographer has filed a lawsuit of their own.

“We filed a lawsuit today in Los Angeles Superior Court against Alec Baldwin, the rust Producer, Armorer’s Hannah Gutierrez-Reid, first assistant director David Halls, and other defendants who may be responsible for Halina Hutchins’ death,” attorney Gloria Allred said of the Ukrainian-based family members’ negligence and battery civil action. “May she rest in peace.”

“Whoever is responsible for her loss must be held accountable, the lawyer added, quoting Hutchins’ sister. In making the claims, Allred detailed the family’s plight in the war-torn Easter European country under a bloody onslaught by Vladimir Putin and Russian forces. Allred also noted that Halina Hutchins wanted to bring his relatives to the U.S., a move that has now apparently been blocked. According to co-counsel John Carpenter, the family could travel to America in the next few months because of this latest suit.

“There was no outreach, no apology by Mr. Baldwin,” Allred said of why the parents and sister’s lawsuit occurred when Hutchins’ widowed husband and son reached a settlement in their wrongful-death action with Baldwin in October 2022. the rust Producers “We want accountability and justice for them,” the attorney insisted in a complex action in California, home of Rust Productions, which seeks consortium damages under New Mexico law, where the shooting took place.

No stranger to high-profile lawsuits, Allred currently sued Rust script supervisor Maym Mitchell in her November 2021 negligence lawsuit against Baldwin, the Rust producers, and others. Amid a flurry of civil lawsuits over the tragedy, Baldwin railed against the damage to his career from the shooting after repeatedly failing to stop Mitchell’s actions or get out of it. Today, Allred teased that he might move at some point to combine the two cases.

Baldwin and Reed were formally charged with two counts of first degree murder by the DA’s office on Jan. 31 for the Oct. 21, 2021 shooting of Hutchins, after an extensive Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office investigation was released late last year.

Baldwin has long denied that he actually pulled the trigger on the 1880s prop gun that killed and wounded Hutchins. the rust Directed by Joel Souza. As Baldwin fights the charges and prosecutors, a virtual first hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24 before Land of Enchantment State Judge Mary Marlowe Summers. If Judd Summer decides from that hearing that there is enough evidence to proceed, the case will proceed Next proceed to preliminary hearings and ultimately to trial.

The announcement today by the families of Allred and Hutchins comes that the “firearms enhancement” charge that Baldwin and Reid were hit with last month may be on shaky legal ground. This discomfort is not from the charge itself, which carries an additional five years in prison or even behind the charge. Because the enhanced charge doesn’t become law in New Mexico until May 2022, months after the Hutchins were killed in Rust Sette, it could be outlawed.

On Thursday, a spokeswoman for Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwiss told Deadline that the DA’s office is under review of the charges and the law. “The district attorney and special prosecutor are actively reviewing all applicable laws to ensure they have the strongest case to secure justice for Halina Hutchins,” Heather Brewer said, adding that the charges have not changed.

Calling the Santa Fe DA’s indictment a “terrible miscarriage of justice,” Baldwin and his Queen Emanuel legal team are seeking to have the appointed special prosecutor fired.
