Bernard-Henri Levy doc ‘Slava Ukrainian’ heads to EFM as France TV distribution picks up international rights
Exclusive: France TV Distribution has boarded international sales of the documentary by French philosopher and writer Bernard-Henri Lévy and director-photographer Marc Russell. Slava Ukraine and will launch the title in EFM.
The film documents the situation in Ukraine in the final months of 2022 as Russia’s brutal invasion of the country’s soil.
ARP Selection will release the feature doc in theaters in France on February 22, just two days before the first anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022.
Slava Ukraine Visits conflict hotspots through a war diary documenting a trip to Kharkiv in the frontline region of Donbas as well as the strategic Black Sea-Dnieper river port of Kherson after the city’s liberation on November 11, 2022.
It bears witness to the ravages of war and shares the struggle of the Ukrainian people through the testimonies of soldiers, frontline histories and portraits of civilians.
France TV Distribution SVP International Sales Julia Schulte and Deputy SVP International Sales Renan Artukmak described the film as “an important statement of solidarity”.
“Slava Ukraine Marching through the invaded regions of Ukraine, giving a voice to the brave people who do not give up the fight for their country, their freedom and democracy,” they said.
The documentary follows Levy’s 2022 feature doc why ukraine which covers the early months of the invasion and was recently broadcast on the French-German Channel Arte.
Both films were produced by François Margolin, Levy’s longtime producer at Margo Cinema.
Levy, or BHL as he is known in his native France, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the start of the invasion, saying its defeat at the hands of the Russians would be a blow not only to the country but to democracy. Europe and worldwide.
He has been a regular visitor to the country since the 2014 revolution that ousted Russian-backed President Viktor Yanukovych and has strong ties to the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
French media reported in early February that Levy had arranged a special screening Slava Ukraine Claude Lelouch’s Cine 13 theater in Paris for Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov and his French counterpart Sebastien Lecornu when he traveled to the French capital for talks with former President Emmanuel Macron.
