China game for ‘Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’, sets release in step with domestic
Paramount/Ewan’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Became the latest Hollywood film to gain access to China. The studio’s Weibo account posted the news Monday morning local time, targeting the adaptation of the iconic Hasbro role-playing game to debut in North America on March 31, the day-date.
Paramount released its 30-second Super Bowl commercial trailer on Friday D&D. The action comedy stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Reggie-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head and Hugh Grant. The film will debut with its world premiere on March 10 at SXSW.
It centers on a band of unlikely adventurers who embark on an epic heist to recover a lost relic. Things go dangerously awry when they run into the wrong people.
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley directed the script written with Michael Gillio.
Producers are Jeremy Latcham, Brian Goldner and Nick Meyer. Dennis L. Stewart, Goldstein, Daly, Pine, Zev Foreman and Greg Muradian are executive producers.
When the first trailer premiered at Comic-Con last summer, Grant noted that the film has “a Monty Python sensibility.”
Also at Comic-Con, Goldstein teased what fans can expect in the film, which also features in the Hasbro Wizards of the Coast game, “including characters from the lore that will provide a runway for multiple films.”
After a lack of studio titles in 2022, Chinese authorities recently extended approval, notably Marvel’s greenlight Black Panther: Wakanda Forever And Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania. The former was released last week and debuted last November, and generated an expected soft turnout as it dominated long-running Chinese New Year headlines elsewhere. A good litmus test would be for a movie comeback with a Marvel character Ant-Man 3 which begins this Friday (presales begin today in markets where, however, a host of local movies are also slated to debut for Valentine’s Day).
Also on deck in Hollywood are Warner Bros/New Line/DC Shazam: Wrath of God 17 March Day and Date and Focus’ Mrs. Harris went to Paris Also on March 31 (the latter began an offshore rollout last summer).
