Evangeline Lilly on friend and fellow MCU actor Jeremy Renner: “He recovers like a mofo”

Jeremy Renner surprised the world with his seemingly violent comeback after a near-death avalanche accident on New Year’s Day, and no one is happier than fellow MCU actor Evangeline Lilly.

Renner, recounting a recent visit with Lily, whose latest entry into the Marvel universe is next week Ant-Man and the Wasp: QuantummaniaIn an interview with Access Hollywood, she said she feared something worse than what she encountered on her tour with Renner.

“He recovered like a mofo,” says Lily.

“I went to his house and I got goosebumps because I thought, ‘Why are you mobile? Why are you mobile? What’s going on?’ I was hoping to sit on her bed and hold her hand while she cried and writhed in pain. But he was walking around himself, laughing with friends. It is a miracle. It’s an outright miracle.”

He continued, “He’s made of really tough stuff, that guy. You’ve always been able to see that in him. He’s recovering incredibly, and it’s beautiful. I’m so grateful.”

Lilly and Renner first worked together on the 2010 Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow Heart LockerAnd now share space in the Marvel universe: he plays the Wasp, he plays the Avengers Hawkeye.

“When we made [The Hurt Locker], she was very young and full of courage,” Lilly said of two-time Oscar nominee Renner. “I remember being impressed by him. What’s so ironic is that at the time I was on some level a celebrity cameo, because I was missing. I was like, who is this guy?” Renner was Oscar-nominated for his performance.

The actor broke more than 30 bones when he pulled under his Pistonbulli snowplow near his Nevada home. The accident was, as Lilly says, a near-death experience.
