‘Grenfell’: Peter Kosminski in BBC drama on Tower Inferno that killed 72
Peter Kosminski is making a reality drama for the BBC about the Grenfell disaster.
After more than five years of research, BBC Dr Grenfell From The Forge will provide a comprehensive account of the events, timing and aftermath of the devastating fire on 14 June 2017, which killed 72 people.
Told from multiple perspectives, the three-part series will focus on the human stories of those caught up in the tragedy, exploring Grenfell’s profound impact on survivors, the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, the firefighters on duty that night, and the wider community.
BAFTA winner Kosminsky, whose past credits include The wolf became And state, Will write and direct and Ahmed Pierbax is associate producer. A number of documentaries have aired on the tragedy, including a BBC feature, also titled grenfell, But Kosminski’s play will be his first scripted project.
“Sometimes, events happen in our national story that touch us all,” Kosminski said.
“The Grenfell Tower fire is one such incident. We remember what we were doing when we heard about it, remember the image, the saturation coverage. And yet, despite this, despite the many newspaper pages and TV hours devoted to the story, we may have a less clear idea of what exactly happened, what went wrong.
Kosminski added that his play will “pick our way through hours of public testimony to get to the heart of this disaster.”
BBC Drama Director Lindsay Salt Grenfell “It will use drama’s unique ability to show the human side of what happened sensitively and respectfully.”
