Richard Ayoade to direct and star in ‘The Semplica Girl Diaries’ in early talks to join US and UK talent – EFM
Exclusive: BAFTA winner Richard Ayoade (It’s crowded) is set to direct and star in The Semplica Girl DiaryWritten by Ayoade and Booker Prize-winning author George Saunders.
Ayoade and Lydia Fox (Souvenir 1 & 2) will lead the cast and we hear from market sources that early talks are underway with A-list US and UK talent including Ben Stiller, Jesse Eisenberg and Sally Hawkins. No one signed in yet.
Adapted from the story of the same name, which was originally published The New YorkerThe film is set in a near-future world where real-life ‘Semplica Girls’ are imported from poor countries around the world to serve as decorative items for rich people.
Cornerstone Films is handling global sales and launching for this week’s EFM
The movie is a House Production / Alcove Entertainment production and produced by Tessa Ross and Juliet Howell (surprise), and Robin C. Fox and Amina Dasmal (double) The film was produced by Tessa Ross for House Productions and Robin C. Fox for Access Entertainment with Alcove Entertainment.
The film will executive-produce and co-finance 4. Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen will executive-produce for Access Entertainment.
Here’s a full synopsis: “Family man Lloyd Turner (Ayoade) faces the prospect of a new decade of hatred and mediocrity leading up to his 40th birthday. After attending yet another party hosted by his daughter’s friend’s wealthy parents, and in order to give his daughters the happiness he feels they deserve, Lloyd and his wife Sarah (Fox) make the financially crippling decision to invest in what turns out to be. The elite’s new favorite status symbol: a set of ‘semplica girls’ to decorate their front lawns. Yet when Lloyd’s youngest daughter, Ida, discovers what’s happening in her name on her own doorstep, it threatens to plunge her family into deeper chaos than they’ve ever known…”
