The BBC’s Indian office was investigated by Income Tax authorities

Income tax authorities have raided BBC offices in Mumbai and New Delhi.

The findings come after the publication of a BBC documentary India: The Modi QuestionWhich criticized the country’s President Narendra Modi.

Although the doc was only broadcast in the UK, the Indian government called it “anti-Indian rubbish” and protests were held outside the BBC’s headquarters in central London.

“The Income Tax authorities are currently in the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai and we are fully cooperating. We hope to resolve this situation as soon as possible,” a BBC Studios spokesperson said this morning.

According to the BBC, more than 1,000 Muslims died during the chaos that began after a train carrying Hindi pilgrims was set on fire.

Indian free speech activists have tried to repost the film on social media after the film was removed following the passing of the Emergency Act. Last month, students who gathered to watch the screening were detained.

India has become an increasingly hostile country for media critical of the government. The opposition Congress party called the probes “undemocratic” and warned “the autocratic attitude can no longer continue.”

However, a spokesman for Modi’s ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party called the BBC “the most corrupt organization in the world”.
