The TV Academy has published its annual report on the organization’s demographics

According to a new demographic report released by the TV Academy, more than 74 percent of its members are white, and the majority — at least those who answered this particular question — say they’re between the ages of 41 and 55.

Of the 79 percent who answered the gender question, 54.3 percent said they were male, 45 percent said they were female, and .4 were non-conforming/non-binary.

Most respondents said they were straight while over 12 percent identified as gay and 1 percent as pansexual. Of those who answered questions about disabilities, 28.3 percent reported cognitive difficulties while 20.2 said they had hearing difficulties.

Why are these statistics important? The academy has pledged to be more transparent about membership by publishing an annual population report.

“This report allows us to annually assess representation within the organization, advance our initiatives and outreach, and measure our progress,” said Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Sherma. “We have also revised our mission statement to reflect the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and our commitment to this journey. We continue to believe that we have an important role to play in leading industry change.”

Although the TV Academy has 20,583 members, only 67.4% answered the question about race. Of those, the majority were white and 10.4 percent said they were black, 8.5 percent were Latino, and 3.2 percent were East or Southeast Asian. The sample pool was even smaller for generational breakdown (only 36.2 percent of members responded) and for sexual orientation (23.5 percent).

The report can be found here.
