‘The Woman King’ wins big at the 23rd Annual Black Reel Awards
Woman is king Which outshone all the competition at this year’s The Black Reel Awards. With six wins out of fourteen nominations, Woman is king Arrested for Outstanding Film, Outstanding Director, Outstanding Supporting Actor, Breakthrough Actress, Outstanding Score and Outstanding Editing.
Gina Prince-Bythewood’s sweeping epic that focuses on the female warriors of Dahomey narrowly outshines Marvel’s superhero movies, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever That wins 5 black reels on its own. going into the night Wakanda forever was tied with Woman is king With fourteen award nominations. Along with winning his third Black Reel Award for Outstanding Costume Design Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverFantastic Ruth E. Carter became the most decorated technical award winner in Black Reel history.
Actress Angela Bassett also made Black Reel history, becoming the first woman to win an acting and honorary award in the same year. Ms. Bassett won Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and has also received the prestigious Sidney Poitier Trailblazer Award in recognition of his acting excellence. In 2005, Bassett joined Jamie Foxx, the only person honored, in claiming the Vanguard Award and Outstanding Actor Award for Ray.
Independent studio A24, which received 10 nominations Inspection And Jeremy Pope cashed in four wins, thanks to two awards (Outstanding Actor and Breakthrough Actor). Not to be outdone by Pope, writer-director Elegance Bratton also took home two awards for Outstanding Independent Film and First Screenplay.
